The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) supports Alabama's citizens through a network of more than 220 public libraries across the state. Our mission is to strengthen library services statewide so that every Alabamian has access to quality information resources. We're currently looking for an Assitant to the Director to help us carry out that mission by supporting the high-quality services and resources APLS provides to Alabama's public libraries.

Job Title:            Assistant to the Director

The position, based in Montgomery, Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, is appointed (non-merit) and serves at the discretion of the Director. 

The successful candidate will have experience in library administration, budget management, communication skills, and knowledge of the legislative process. They will work closely with the Director, ALPS staff, Executive Board, APLS leadership, and external partners to improve services and best practices. This position reports to the APLS Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a point of contact in an advisory role for public libraries regarding policy and administrative code compliance.
  • Monitor legislation, especially the appropriations process and relevant committee hearings by following bills related to libraries, delivering timely updates to leadership, and assist the Director in positioning the organization to respond strategically.
  • Along with the Director, build and maintain collaborative working relationships with the APLS Executive Board, department leadership, staff, and policymakers to advance shared goals.
  • In absence of the Director, represent APLS in public forums, including meetings, conferences, and collaborative initiatives.

Essential Functions Include: 

  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral formats, tailoring complex information to a variety of internal and external audiences.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate activities such as board meetings, library events, and attend or participate in a variety of public and special community events throughout the year.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited library school with a minimum of three (3) years of library experience in an administrative capacity OR be a college graduate with a master’s degree with a major in library science who shall have had a minimum of five (5) years of library experience in an administrative capacity.
  • Ten (10) years public library experience
  • Knowledge of Alabama government with emphasis on the legislative and regulatory process

Salary:

  • $2,544.30, semi-monthly/ $61,063.20, annually. Pay days are the 1st and 16th of each month.
